Food Allergies Snacks

For people with food allergies, snacks that are safe can be difficult to find. This is especially difficult for individuals who suffer from peanut allergies and wheat allergies. These two items are commonly found in all kinds of different foods. Because peanut allergies can be especially dangerous, it is so important to be careful when it comes to what you eat. If you are the parent of an allergic child, it may be even more difficult to make sure your child eats only safe snacks. It takes a great deal of vigilance but it can be done.

The first thing you should do is notify everyone who needs to know about the offending allergy. This may include your family, friends, co-workers and school. If your child has the allergy, the school and any friends your child spends time with should be aware of the allergy. Some schools have banned peanut products because of the allergy risk, although not all of them have. It is important also to educate your child about how peanuts can be in foods you wouldn't suspect. For example, peanuts and traces of peanuts can be in everything from milk chocolate to chili.

The best snacks for those with serious food allergies are natural foods such as fruits and vegetables. When you eat an apple that's been washed and peeled, for example, you can be sure there are no peanuts in it. The danger here comes in fruit dips that may have been produced at a factory that works with peanuts. Once you have identified your allergy it is so much easier to choose snacks that are appropriate. For example, someone with a peanut allergy may be able to enjoy fruits, vegetables and any other snacks that do not contain peanuts or peanut oils.

Learning about food allergies, snacks that are safe, and what to do in case of a reaction is something you should do with your doctor or your child's pediatrician if it is your child who suffers from the allergy. Mild food allergies may be treated with an antihistamine medication, while severe food allergies may require an epinephrine injection. The best course of action is to avoid the offending food or foods altogether. As more is known about food allergies, companies are taking more precautions to keep consumers safe.
